Seal Shield and a bit of a rant.

As I mentioned last time, today was our first board event of the season, I have been playing pretty well recently and so I was looking forward to having a decnt round and hopefully finally getting my first handicap cut of the season.

Things didnt start well, on the par 3 first I carded a 7, but things steadied and I hit some good shots, unfortunately, everytime I started pulling things back I had another bad hole, right up until the last, when, looking like I might put in a decent score, I took 6. As it happened I finshed in 4th place with  net 75 but once again things could have been so much better.

Rant time

There was also a bit of trouble with visitors on the course. As it was a major competition, which we normally play on Sundays, we had the 1st tee reserved to allow everyone to get away.
My playing partner and I were 2nd out and all went well until, when playing the 8th, we noticed a big group of men standing on the 10th tee. The group in from of us walked over and spoke to them and they moved to the 12th, but by the time we had reached the 14th, we could see that they were holding up the group on front of us,and so the rest of the field too. This continued right to the end of the round. Now this did not really  affect my game, although waiting 10 minutes to take shots when it was raining can't help it. It turned out that they were a group of 12 visitors playing in 4 balls and they were told that it would be ok to go and start on the 10th hole.

Now it doesn't take a genius to work out that two balls would only take a hour and a half to reach the 10th, yet someone thought it OK to send them to the 10th a hour after the first 2ball had set off. It is common sense to realised that they would soon be caught up, and in fairness you couln't expect them to wait while a dozen groups played through them. If they had been told to wait no more than 30 minutes they could have happily started on the first and there would have been no problem.

Anyway, here is the round in all its highs and lows.

Hole 1, I topped a 6 iron off the tee which went about 50 yds, a decent pitch ran through the green but I duffed the chip back which only reached the fringe. I then 4 putted for a horrendous quad bogey 7.

Hole 2, I hit a good drive to the middle of the fairway, didnt quite hit a 5 iron correctly but it ended up 40 yds from the green, iIchippped to 20 feet and holed the putt for a par 4.

Hole 3,Aanother good drive, laid up before the ditch with a 7 iron butr it rolled a bit to much and finshed in the rough, not the best pitch to 30yds short of the green, chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey 6.

Hole 4, Pulled a 6 iron left, chipped over a bunker but the ball ran off the green, chipped back to 2 feet and holed the putt for a bogey 4.

Hole 5, A good drive which left 150yds to the green, hit a 5 iron but thinned it a little, it ran to about 40 yds from the green, chipped to about 15 feet but missed the putt, a bogey 5.

Hole 6, A good drive and a decent 3 wood left me 80 yds, the pitch hit the green but ran off the side, chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey 6.

Hole 7, A decent drive but a bit short, left 170yds over a ditch to the green, decided to risk it and hit a good  3 wood, unfortunely it was slightly off line and found a greenside bunker. I came out too well, and flew the green into a lateral hazard, took a drop, chipped to about 10 feet but missed the putt so a triple bogey 7.

Hole 8, A decent drive but into the wind so a little short, took a 3 wood and just carried the ditch but not the best of lies and my pitch from 90yds ended up with a bunker between the ball and the hole. I hit a lovely chip to a foot and holed the putt for a par 5.

Hole 9. A bit of luck, thinned a 9 iron, which bobbled its way to the green, 2 putts for a par 3.

So 47 shots going out, not too bad after the disaster of the first.

Hole 10, A good drive left me 170yds to the green, I hit a great 3 wood which reached the front of the green, I hit a long putt to 18inches and holed that for a par 4.

Hole 11, The wind caught my drive and it ended up close to a tree in not the best of lies, hit it to 150yds from the green but in the rough and had to lay up short of the ditch, my 4th ran through to the back fringe but I overhit my putt and then missed the return for a double bogey 7.

Hole 12. I hit a great drive straight at the flag and it finished just 6 feet short, sadly missed the birdie putt but still a par 3.

Hole 13. A decnt drive and a good 3 wood left me about 40 yds fom the green, I pitched  to 8 feet but missed the par putt for a bogey 5.

Hole 14, I didnt quite catch my 5 iron tee shot correctly and it landed in a bunker, just managed to get it out but then scuffed a chip, then left my first putt way short and missed the next for a triple bogey 6.

Hole 15, A decent drive and 3 wood left 90yds to the green, I hit a 9 iron a little flat and although it hit the green it finished on the top tier with the hole on the bottom tier, I left a tricky putt a bit short and missed with the second so a bogey 6.

Hole 16, Hit my drive way left and into a lateral hazard, took a drop in the trees and managed a low punch to 60yds short, pitched on and 2 putted for a double bogey 6.

Hole 17, Hit a good drive, then laid up short of the ditch, hit a great 3 wood fromn 180yds that finished about 15 feet from the hole, missed the putt but a nice par 5.

Hole 18, Hit a decent teeshot but pulled it a little left into a bunker, first escape hit the lip and fell back into the bunker then I overshot the green with the 2nd, chipped on and 2 putted for a triple bogey 6.

So 48 shots coming home, a bit disappointing, considering the 2 triples on par 3s,  for a total of 95.

So I finished up with a nett 75, in my buffer, so no increase. My luck evened itself out over the round, but the poor irons off the tees on the par 3s were very costly, quite anoying as I had been hitting them well  last week. On the plus side, I hit mostly good drives and some really well hit 3 woods, I also used my 2 Vokey wedges and generally hit them well too.

Pairs events

This last week has seen two pairs competitions, the first a mixed greensome and then a foursomes. The two events are quite similar, involving both players taking alternate shots, However in greensomes, both players tee shot on each hole and then choose the ball to play the rest of the hole with, whereas in foursomes each player plays the tee shot on alternate holes.

In the mixed event I played with same guy I won last season closing mixed with, so we went out optimistically, and too be fair we didnt play too badly, we were let down however by our inabilty to get down in 2 shots from around the green. On most holes we were on or close to the green in regulation shots, but weak chips or weak putting let us down most of the time. We finished with a reasonable total of 33 points and in fairness we would never have won as the winning score was a quite remarkable 47 points.

I played  a couple of practice rounds during the week before thursdays competition and and played pretty well, so again I was full of optimism going into the foursome competition. Again I was partnering someone who I had won with last season.

Sadly our round started poorly with us finding unplayable lies and also several ditches and culminated in a fresh air shot by myself and after 8 holes we had only managed 7 points. We did play a lot better for the remaining 10 holes and scored a further 20 points, which was a good return, but the first 8 holes let us down badly. We finished 6 points behind the winners. The competition was a qualifier for a Lancashire Ladies competition and fortunately due to players who beat us being unable to play on the day of the final, myself and my partner found that we would be playing in the final.

The good thing about this last week is that I seem to have refound my ability to hit irons and so am now a lot more confident in using them as I was a couple of weeks ago.

I have the first of our major board event competitions this afternoon, so I am hoping my game stands up and I can score well, I really need to reverse my handicap trend and get it dropping instead of going up.

A busy week

The first at BOL

This weeks golf started on Sunday, when Ellesmere had a match against Romiley in the Bell Cup, a knockout for ladies teams in the Manchester area. Each club has to play the lowest handicapped players of those available so I was a little lucky to scrape into the team in the 7th place. I didnt ply brilliant, I managed to go 2 up early on but at the end of the first nine we were back to all square. Fortunately I had a purple patch and parred the first 3 holes of the back nine to go 3 up. Particularly pleasing was the 191 yard 12th where I put my tee shot on the green for the first time ever. I then received a shot on the 13th and won that hole to go 4 up. Despite, my opponent winning a couple of the holes that were left I held on to my lead to win the match. Happily the team won the mach by 5 games to 2, so we are through into the next round.

The next game was on Tuesday in a Shield team match against Blackley, we played Blackley a few times last season and always seemed to lose the match so we were hoping to turn the tables on them. As it turned out I was playing against a girl who beat me in a very rainy match at Blackley last year. In fairness it wasn't the greatest match and in the end it was down to the player who made the fewest mistakes, after being only one hole in it all the way round we reached the 16th all square and after both finding the fairway, I pulled my 2nd shot left, it ran through the trees lining the fairway and finished up in a ditch, my opponent then did the same thing but luckily for her, her ball hit a tree and bounced back onto the fairway. I took a penalty drop in the trees and managed to get my ball close to the green in 4, but my opponent messed up her chip and then left her next short of the green, I maanged to get down in 2 more shots and my opponent 3 putted so I very fortuitously won the hole, I then won the 17th for a hard fought 2&1 win. Happily the team did very well and we won the match 6-1.

Now, I hadn't been too happy with my iron shots of late and so had booked a lesson on Wednesday, James my pro, spotted a couple of things I was doing wrong, so on Thursday I was a bit more confident for the medal round we were playing. Sadly my very first shot was with a 6 iron amd it squirted right of the tee into a bank, which started me off rather badly, also my driving wasn't as consistant as usual and although I generally didnt play too badly, I scored very poorly, mostly by taking on risky shots following bad drives, although on reflection I didn't really play that badly on the holes where I hit a decent drive.

Too many shots to detail one by one, but here is a brief breakdown of the round

Hole 1, awful tee shot ended up with a 7
Hole 2, played it well got a 5
Hole 3, Poor teeshot and failed poor recovery took 8
Hole 4, hit the green and 2 putts a par 3
Hole 5, On the green in 3 and 2 putts for a bogey 5
Hole 6, On in 4 and 2 putts for a bogey 6
Hole 7, on the fringe in 3 but took 3 more to get down double bogey 6
Hole 8, poor drive into trees ended up with double bogey 7
Hole 9, caught water with tee shot, got a double bogey 5
Hole 10, unluckily hit a tree with my 2nd, double bogey 6
Hole 11 3 good shots but just caught greenside bunker came out too strong and found a tree, finshed with an 8.
Hole 12,  hit the green off the tee but 3 putted,  bogey 4
Hole 13, just short in 2 bogey 5
Hole 14, short of green off the tee, bogey 4
Hole 15, on the green in 3 and 2 putts for par 5
Hole 16, short in 2 down in bogey 5
Hole 17, bad drive, failed to hit good recovery then found a water hazard finished with a 9
Hole 18, good teeshot but just caught branches of a tree anf fell back into ditch, tired again and hit tree again, ended up taking 10.

so I went round in 105 but 35 shots were taken on just 4 holes, the other 14 weren't too bad,  bu tthe result meant another 0.1 added to my handicap which is now at 19.6.

So today, friday, saw me off to Bolton Old Links (pictured at the top), perched on the hills above the town, to play the first round in an informal competition organized on the Golf Monthly forum by some of the members in the North West.

http://gmgolfnorthwest.blogspot.co.uk/

It was a lovely day and not too windy fortunately as due to the location, when the wind blows it is brutal up there. I had a great game playing with two low handicappers, one of whom scored 22 points on the first nine alone with some great golf, although he did go off on the 2nd nine. For myself, I actually hit the ball as well as I have for a few weeks, although I found the pace of the greens very hard to judge, which resulted in 5 three putts and one four putt. I also didn't have the best of luck staying out of bunkers. Nevertheless I scored 31 points off 7/8 handicap, this included 6 pars but also sadly 4 blobs but overall I was very happy with the way I played and unlike thursday I drove well.
I have to say that BOL is great course with no two holes the same and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a round in the Manchester area.

So ends a busy week of golf and I still have the clubs Opening Mixed competition to look forward to on Sunday.

The trouble with irons

The firsr competitive golf this week was the Ladies Captain's v Lady Secretary's match, it was more a fun game really played over 12 holes. I didnt play too badly but giving 5 shots to a player who was on form was a tough ask and I lost the match on the last.

On monday we had the first match in the Manchester area Shield, which starts of as leagues but then becomes a knockout. Our first match was against Saddleworth GC at home. I was receiving 2 shots and that, coupled with my knowledge of our greens, meant that I came out the winner by 5&3. The team match ended up as a draw 3½ - 3½. Not the best of starts as home advantage can be massive so you really need to win at home, but its only the first game, there are still 7 more to go.

So we come to the club's weekly competition, this week a Stableford. My long iron play as been very indifferent recently so I was hoping for some stability. I started reasonably although a bad chip and an awful drive resulting in 2 early blobs, but I then found some consistant golf and I scored very well for the next 10 holes, with 6 net birdies and 4 net pars. This put me on line for a good score if  I played steadily over the last 3 holes. Unfortunately at this point my long iron play, which had been a bit up and down all round went to pot and I only scored one point over the 3 holes, for a final score of 34 points. This was enough to see me come 3rd in the competition and also safely in my handicap buffer, but from looking forward to a handicap cut with 3 holes to go, the final score was very disappointing.

So, as usual, onto the round.

Hole 1, I pulled my 6 iron left, but  a chip onto the green and 2 putts gave me a steady start of a  bogey 4 and 2 points.

Hole 2, I hit a good long drive, followed by a reasonable 3 wood to 40 yds, sadly I mishit the chip into a bunker, and came out too strongly right over the green, I chipped on but missed my putt so a triple bogey 7 and no points.

Hole 3, Another good drive, but I have to lay up infront of the ditch with my second, I pulled a 7 iron left, which gave a pitch over a large tree, just caught the top branches and fell  short of the green, I chipped on but a bit long and 3 putted for a double bogey 7, I did get 2 shots though so I scored 2 points.

Hole 4, Again pulled a 6 iron left, but chipped to 10 feet and holed the putt for a par 3 and 3 points.

Hole 5, Completely mishit drive to bad rough, then had an air shot, I knock out to the fairway but then 3 wood into a ditch so a penalty drop, then an 8 iron was short of the green so I picked up as it was another blob.

Hole 6, A good drive, was followed by a slightly topped 3 wood, which left me about 60 yds from the green, I pitched on and 2 putted for a par 5 and 3 points.

Hole 7, A reasonable drive went a bit right, so the green was blocked out by trees, I hit a decent 5 iron just short of the green, chipped to about 15 feet and holed the putt for a par 4 and 3 more points.

Hole 8, A lovely long straight drive and a nice 3 wood left me just short of the green, the chip wasnot  as close as I would have liked but 2 putts fot the 3rd par in a row and another 3 points.

Hole 9, Slightly worried as I have hit poor tee shots here recently, but hit an 8 iron pin high but just left of the green, It was however in some newly turfed area which was GUR. I hd a free drop, I would have chipped over the GUR but the stream right off the green is ready to catch a thinned or over hit chip so I elected to putt over the GUR, overhit the putt, as I was worried about the new turf holding up the ball, so left myself about 10 feet, and I missed the par putt, but a bogey 4 for 2 points.

So the 4 pars negated the 2 blobs and I finished the first 9 with 18 points.

Hole 10, A decent drive to light rough, the lie was good enough for my 3 wood which I hit to 50 yds, I pitched onto green, then holed a 20+ foot putt for a par 4 and 3 points.

Hole 11, I hit a good drive and good lay up, left me an 80yd pitch to green I found the green and 2 putts gave me a par 5 and 3 points.

Hole 12, My drive went right, I chipped to fringe but left my first putt 6 feet short fortunately holed it for a bogey 4 and 2 points.

Hole 13, My drive caught the trees but fortunately came back onto the fairway, I hit a nice 3 wood to 60 yds, A pitch on and 2 putts gave me a bogey 5, I get 2 shots here so another 3 points.

Hole 14, I normally take a 5 iron here, but the way I was hitting my irons I decided to take a 5 wood instead, My teeshot landed on the green but ran through and over the back, I chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey 4 and 2 points.

Hole 15, A reasonable drive and 3 wood, left me with a 6 iron to the green but I hit it way right, I hit a lovely chip to 2 feet but missed the putt, so a bogey 6 and 2 points.

Hole 16, I hit a good drive, but then completely mishit a 7 iron, which ran through trees into a ditch, I took a penalty drop in trees, but then hit a tree, I chipped to fairway, then played a  pitch and run to a foot, but that was my 6th shot so a blob

Hole 17, I hit another good drive and took a 7 iron to layup infornt of the ditch, this 7 iron I hit too well and it finished on the path just over the ditch ,, a free drop into rough, then I squirted a 6 iron right onto another path. another drop, but trees were blocking the grren, I chipped to right of green, the ball coming to rest against a wall, so yet another free drop, chipped onto the green and 2 putted for a double bogey 7 and 1 point.

Hole 18, I hit a 6 iron off the tee which squirted way right, I pitched to the green but over hit the ball and it went out of bounds, I tried again and failed to find the green, putt my chip into a bunker so picked up for another blob.

So despite scoring 15 points on the first 6 holes on the back nine. The shambles of the last 3 meant I finished the nine with 16 points for a round total of 34.

So I mostly drove and pitched well, my fairway woods were generally decent and my putting was mostly good, but when I had a long iron in my hands I really had no confidence in what was going to happen, this is most worrying, as last year my long irons were the strongest par of my game. In the coming few days I have 2 matches for the club but next wednesday I have booked a lesson to see if I can get to the bottom of my iron play. Fingers crossed it will soon get sorted out.

Well that wasn't part of the plan

It was the first Medal of the season yesterday, I hadn't played for a week due to being away over the Easter weekend, but after a bit of warming up in the net I felt ready to go. It was a sunny day but with a brisk cold wind, lack of rain mewant the course was very dry. For various reasons, not reading the pace of the greens very well, plus entanglements with trees and several visits to bunkers, it took me 103 shots to get the ball round which disappointing led to a 0.1 increase in handicap to 19.5, which means I now have to play off 20, not a good start when my aim is for a decent reduction over the season.

The round

Hole 1, a reasonable tee shot pin high but pulled left, left a chip to the green, chipped to 10 feet but overhit the putt, holed the return for a bogey 4

Hole 2 A good drive, longer than usual, nearly went into a fairway bunker which is normally out of reach, a decently hit 3 wood caught the top of the bunker but still went about 100 yds, I hit the green from 70yds out, but left my first putt short and missed the 2nd so a double bogey 6.

Hole 3 A good drive, but a slightly mishit second left me 130 from the green but with low hanging branches right infront of me, I tried to hit a low iron under the trees, but only suceeded in hitting into a wide ditch, I had a decent lie and found the green, but again left the first putt 6 feet away and missed so a double bogey 7.

Hole 4 A decent tee shot just short of the green, I chipped to 6 feet but missed the putt, so a bogey 4.

Hole 5 The tee shot was high and held up in to wind, a 3 wood left me  100 yds from the green but I pulled it left and only chipped to the fringe, 3 putts again for a triple bogey 7.

Hole 6 A good drive but a little right, left me under a tree, couldnt get a proper stance but knocked it forward about 50 yds. Hit a decent long iron but left again, chipped to fringe and 3 putted yet again for a double bogey 7.

Hole 7 A good drive but again right left me 140 over trees to the green, it a godo 5 iron which clipped the banches but finished just off the green, left first putt 10 feet short but holed the 2nd for a par 4.

Hole 8 A good straight drive then a 3 wood slightly left, left 50 yards over a bunker chipped ot the back of the green and 2 putts gave me a par 5.

Hole 9, for the 3rd week running squirted my tee shot right onto the wooded bank and it ran down into the ditch, took a drop and pirtched to the side of the green, chipped on and 2 putts for a triple bogey 6.

So front 9 in 50, but without the 4 3 putts, it could have been a resonable score despite messing up the shortest hole on the course yet again.

Hole 10 reasonable drive but right inot the rough but a decent 2nd left me 40 yds, I hitting green but 3 putted again for a double bogey 6.

Hole 11, reasonable drive, but pulled the second to leave 60 yds over trees and a bunker, I cleard the trees but found the bunker, out in one and 2 putts for a bogey 6.

Hole 12, Aweful drive off the heel, found trees, I failed to clear them with my first, then hit the 3rd shot into a bunker, out in one again and 2 putts for a triple bogey 6.

Hole 13, good drive hit the fairway but kicked right and finished up right up against the base of a tree, could only knok it sideways onto the fairway, a good 3rd left me 50 yds short of the green, chip on and 2 putts for a double bogey 6.

Hole 14, topped an iron of the tee and then found a greenside bunker, chipped out but 3 putted for a triple bogey 6.

hole 15, decent drive and 2nd left 150 to the green, finished a little short, chipped on and 2 putts for a bogey 6.

Hole 16 Hit drive right and topped 2nd, pitched just to the side of the green, chip on and 2 putts for a double bogey 6 (8th 6 on the top, pity 3 were on par 3s)

Hole 17, A good drive and second left 160 ot the green, uphill lie meant I skyed the ball a bit but only 30yds short of the green, chip ran off the back of the green, chipped on and 2 putts for a double bogey 7

Hole 18, Hit a decent tee shot pin high but pulled left so a chip over a bunker, found the green and 23 puuts for a bogey 4 to finshed.

Back 8 done in 53 shots,

Despite taking 103 I didnt think I played that badly, I drove pretty well and pitches were mostly decent, 6  3putts were poor, I am normally a lot better than that with my putter, and I did have a few shots that ended up too close to treesMy main worry though is the par 3s, I seem unalbe to hit consistantly with an iron off the tee. its one of the few shots I dont practice to I am goin to have to get my head down and sort this out..

I have a couple of match play games coming up next week, I enjoy match play it presents a different challenge.
